The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to repeal a crucial legal finding that forms the basis of all federal climate regulations, and climate leaders are not taking it lightly. Sheldon Whitehouse, a senator from Rhode Island, described it as 'old-fashioned, dirty political corruption', accusing the agency of being infiltrated by the fossil fuel industry. The finding, made in 2009, established the legal framework for regulating greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act. The Trump administration argues that the rollback will protect the environment while boosting the economy and lowering energy costs, but experts warn of the potential for trillions in climate damages and healthcare costs. Environmental nonprofits, including the Natural Resources Defense Council, Earthjustice, and the Sierra Club, have pledged to take legal action.
