This is the essence of Rosa María House, a 320-square-metre residence near Madrid, masterfully crafted by the Spanish architecture studio Delavegacanolasso. But here's where it gets intriguing: in an era dominated by sleek, high-tech designs, this home boldly embraces a tactile, pared-back material palette that feels both timeless and revolutionary. Hand-fired Moroccan clay tiles, exposed timber, and plaster walls aren’t just finishes—they’re a statement about what truly matters in architecture.
Nestled between a wooded area and a sprawling lawn, the house is organized around two internal courtyards, seamlessly blending with its natural surroundings. Ignacio de la Vega, co-founder of Delavegacanolasso, describes it as “rooted in essential simplicity—a serene, well-oriented home where light, proportion, and honest materials define the atmosphere.” And this is the part most people miss: the design isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a thoughtful response to the environment and daily life, creating spaces that feel calm and balanced.
A striking feature is the “ceremonial approach” to the home—a path shaded by a long white wall, leading through a porch sheltered by wooden slats to a central corridor. This corridor is flanked by two courtyards, each wrapped in full-height glazing and sliding doors. Controversially, some might argue that such openness sacrifices privacy, but De la Vega counters that it invites nature in, fostering a deeper connection with the outdoors. The roof, with its folded geometry, is the star here, meticulously designed to control how and when light enters the house.
The larger courtyard acts as an extension of the dining area, paved with the same hand-fired clay tiles that grace the interior floors, while the smaller courtyard to the north is a pebbled, plant-filled oasis. These tiles, alongside exposed plywood carpentry, pine plank ceilings, and white-painted steel frameworks, form a material palette that feels both rustic and refined. Outside, the home’s pale cream rendered walls and terracotta roof tiles echo the rural charm of the area, while the interior’s handcrafted elements—like the irregular, character-rich tiles—contrast with the precision of the prefabricated roof structure. “This dialogue between the handcrafted and the technical reinforces the house’s serene yet dynamic character,” De la Vega explains.
The bedrooms, positioned to catch the morning sun, and the living area, which opens onto a sheltered terrace, further emphasize the home’s thoughtful orientation. A suspended steel staircase leads to an upper-level study, bathed in eastern light. Founded in 2017 by De la Vega and Pilar Cano-Lasso, Delavegacanolasso continues to push boundaries, as seen in their earlier projects like a prefabricated steel-framed cabin and a mirrored extension for a hidden Madrid house.
