Heathers The Musical: McKenzie Kurtz Departs, Jodie Steele Returns - Off-Broadway Casting Update (2026)

Big news for Heathers fans! McKenzie Kurtz has concluded her run as Heather Chandler in the Off-Broadway revival of Heathers: The Musical. But don't worry, the show must go on! Stepping back into the iconic role is none other than Jodie Steele, who originated the part in the West End production. She's set to grace the stage starting December 19th, offering audiences a limited engagement through the end of January. This is definitely something to look forward to! But here's where it gets interesting... Standby Sara Al-Bazali will be filling in on December 17th and 18th.

This revival, a continuation of the Kevin Murphy-Laurence O'Keefe musical, opened its doors on July 10th. The show has been a hit, and you can check out what the critics had to say about it.

Heathers: The Musical is a cult favorite, and this production is special as it's playing in the very venue that hosted its original run. The musical is adapted from the beloved 1988 film, following Veronica Sawyer's journey through Westerberg High. She befriends the popular but cruel Heathers, only to have her life turned upside down by a mysterious rebel. The show is directed by Andy Fickman.

The cast includes Kuhoo Verma as Veronica Sawyer, Casey Likes as J.D., Jackera Davis as Heather Duke, Elizabeth Teeter as Heather McNamara, and Kerry Butler as Ms. Fleming and Veronica's Mom.

Jodie Steele's return is particularly noteworthy, as she previously stepped in during Kurtz's earlier leave of absence. Casting for this production is handled by The Telsey Office, with Rachel Hoffman and Jimmy Larkin at the helm.

Heathers: The Musical first premiered in Los Angeles in 2013 and moved to New World Stages in 2014. The show was revised for a 2018 West End run. The New York revival features several new songs and script changes, making it a fresh experience for both new and returning audiences.

Fickman has reunited with his London creative team for this Off-Broadway production, including choreographer Gary Lloyd. The New York iteration also includes additional choreography by Stephanie Klemons. The team includes set and costume designer David Shields, lighting designer Ben Cracknell, and sound designer Dan Samson. Will Joy serves as music supervisor, with Mona Seyed-Bolorforosh as music director.

The associate team includes Taylor Haven Holt as associate director, Colleen Doherty as associate lighting designer, Germán Martinez as associate sound designer, and Amanda Roberge as assistant costume designer. Lisa Connell is the fight director, with Rebecca Reaney as the intimacy coordinator. Bess Marie Glorioso is the production stage manager, and Katherine Shea and Eszter Zador are assistant stage managers.

And this is the part most people miss... The show is produced by Pemberley Productions, with Bill Kenwright LTD., Paul Taylor-Mills, and Jerry Goehring leading the charge, along with a host of other producers.

Now, here's a thought-provoking question: With the changes in cast and the evolution of the show, do you think this revival captures the essence of the original Heathers? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
