Hold onto your hats, London commuters! A major disruption is coming to the Piccadilly Line, and it’s set to last for two whole months. Transport for London (TfL) has officially announced that Southgate station in North London will partially close starting Monday, January 6, 2026, operating as an exit-only stop until mid-March. But here’s where it gets tricky: one of the station’s two escalators will be out of service for essential maintenance, leaving thousands of Tube travelers scrambling for alternatives. And this is the part most people miss: while TfL has outlined bus routes to help, the change could still throw a wrench into daily commutes, especially for those heading to Oakwood, Cockfosters, Arnos Grove, or Palmers Green.
For those traveling north, TfL recommends hopping on the 121 bus to Oakwood or the 298 to Cockfosters. Heading south? The 298 or 382 will take you to Arnos Grove, while the W6 connects to Palmers Green, offering direct National Rail links to Finsbury Park and Moorgate. Richard Jones, TfL’s director of asset performance delivery, acknowledged the inconvenience, stating, ‘We apologise for any disruption and assure customers that this work is crucial for safety and reliability, reducing the risk of future unplanned closures.’
But here’s where it gets controversial: over 1,100 frustrated commuters have signed a petition urging TfL to allow morning entry at Southgate during the works, arguing it would ease peak-hour chaos. Should TfL reconsider its approach, or is this a necessary trade-off for long-term safety? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
In the meantime, affected passengers are advised to plan ahead using the TfL journey planner or the TfL Go app. For the latest updates and a weekly dose of Tube trivia, don’t forget to sign up for our London Underground newsletter HERE. Stay informed, stay patient, and let’s navigate this together!
