Malta's Coastline: Why Geology Matters Before Building! (2026)

Coastal areas in Malta require a thorough geological assessment before any engineering interventions are implemented, according to Peter Gatt, President of the Chamber of Geologists. This call for action comes in the wake of the damage inflicted by Storm Harry, which battered both Malta and Sicily, particularly affecting the Għar Lapsi area. The storm caused extensive damage, altering both the visual appeal and functionality of the region.

The Maltese government has pledged to restore Għar Lapsi, initiating a public consultation to gather public input on the area's regeneration. Infrastructure Minister Chris Bonett confirmed that studies on the rock at Għar Lapsi are underway. However, Gatt emphasizes the critical need for these studies to be conducted by qualified geologists, a profession that is not yet recognized in Malta, unlike in Italy, where geologists have been officially acknowledged since 1963.

Gatt highlights the vulnerability of Malta's coastline, which is crossed by numerous fault lines, making it susceptible to damage from strong waves. He points to Għar Lapsi as a prime example, where the Magħlaq Fault runs along the coast, contributing to the area's significant damage. The weak rock composition, particularly Globigerina Limestone and clay, further exacerbates the issue, as these materials are highly susceptible to wave erosion.

The geologist advocates for the establishment of a National Geological Service to address the lack of geological oversight in the country. He argues that without such a service, engineering interventions may be short-lived and inadequate, as they fail to consider the unique geological characteristics of the site. Gatt emphasizes that a comprehensive geological assessment is essential before any engineering solutions are proposed, ensuring that interventions are both effective and sustainable in the face of climate change impacts.
