Nio Hits a Major Milestone with Over 200 Battery Swap Stations in Shanghai
On December 28, 2025, Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) celebrated a significant achievement by launching its 200th battery swap station in Shanghai, which serves as the company’s global headquarters. This notable expansion underscores Nio's growing impact in the electric vehicle (EV) market within one of China's most populous cities.
Located strategically within a Sinopec gas station, this new facility exemplifies Nio’s collaboration with the Chinese oil giant, further enhancing accessibility for EV users.
As of now, Nio operates a total of 201 battery swap stations in Shanghai, solidifying the city’s position as the hub with the highest density of these facilities in the country. Remarkably, Nio has completed approximately 10.4 million battery swap services in the city to date, showcasing the popularity and efficiency of its service model.
Shanghai, home to around 25 million residents, has proven to be an ideal location for Nio's operations. Earlier this year, on April 13, the company announced reaching a remarkable milestone of 100,000 vehicle deliveries in Shanghai, highlighting the city's robust demand for electric vehicles.
The utilization of Nio's battery swap stations in Shanghai is particularly impressive. According to Stanly Qu, Nio’s Chief Financial Officer, speaking at a forum in November, many of the stations in Shanghai are averaging over 100 services each day, reflecting their pivotal role in the daily lives of EV drivers.
Nio’s collaborative efforts extend beyond Sinopec; the company has previously teamed up with major oil industry players such as China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), and Shell to establish additional battery swap stations. To date, Nio has developed 356 collaborative stations with these partners, further expanding its network across the nation.
Nationwide, Nio boasts a total of 3,655 battery swap stations across China, including 1,008 conveniently located along highways, facilitating long-distance travel for EV owners. In 2025 alone, Nio has introduced 660 new battery swap stations, slightly fewer than the previous year's addition of 679 stations, indicating steady growth in infrastructure development.
In addition to its battery swap stations, Nio operates 4,849 charging stations across China, equipped with 27,642 charging piles. Their charging network also integrates access to over 1.48 million third-party charging piles, offering extensive options for EV charging.
This recent milestone follows just 100 days after reaching the impressive mark of 80 million battery swap services, illustrating Nio’s rapid growth trajectory, as they now provide over 100,000 battery swap services daily.
