An extraordinary dolphin sighting has locals and visitors in the Bay of Islands buzzing! A rare Hector's or Māui dolphin, a species rarely seen in these waters, has been spotted in the Opua Channel, and the Department of Conservation (DOC) is eager for more reports.
This solitary dolphin was observed by Jochen Zaeschmar, a researcher from the Far Out Ocean Research Collective, who is now authorized to collect a DNA sample to confirm its identity. Kristina Hillock, DOC's marine species senior advisor, emphasized the rarity of such sightings, stating, "This would be the second confirmed Hector's sighting in Northland in a century."
Hector's dolphins, once abundant along the South Island and parts of the North Island, are now classified as nationally vulnerable. They reside in various sub-populations around the South Island, with only occasional appearances in the North. The Māui dolphin, a critically endangered subspecies of Hector's, is found on the North Island's west coast, primarily between Taranaki and Kaipara Harbour, with an estimated population of just 54 adults.
Distinguishing between these two species without genetic analysis can be challenging, but they differ from other dolphins in their grey and white coloration with black markings and a unique black rounded fin resembling Mickey Mouse's ear.
"If you spot a dolphin with a rounded fin, report it!" urges DOC. Any sightings should be reported to 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468) or through the SeaSpotter app, available for download on the App Store and Google Play.
