Ricky Ponting Predicts the End of Glenn Maxwell's World Cup Journey (2026)

Glenn Maxwell's World Cup reign as Australia's hero might be over, according to cricket legend Ricky Ponting. The former Australian captain has boldly stated that he doesn't foresee Maxwell participating in another World Cup for the national team. Ponting also addressed a common perception, firmly denying that his generation of cricketers found any satisfaction in the current Australian team's early exit from the global Twenty20 tournament.

Reflecting on Australia's overall performance, even with one match still to play against Oman, Ponting pinpointed the unexpected loss to Zimbabwe as the turning point. "It's been a really poor campaign, it has to be said," Ponting shared. He acknowledged initial injury setbacks, mentioning the unavailability of key players like Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, and Tim David at the outset. However, he emphasized, "But I think just losing to Zimbabwe like they did, that’s going to be the game that they’re going to think back and think like that’s our World Cup gone, there and then." He further elaborated that while Sri Lanka was anticipated to be a tough opponent, the idea of Zimbabwe outplaying Australia in an ICC event highlights missed opportunities that are simply unacceptable in such a high-stakes tournament.

Ponting himself experienced the sting of a World Cup defeat to Zimbabwe back in 2007, the inaugural T20 World Cup. Looking ahead to the 2028 World Cup, which will be hosted on Australian soil, Ponting expressed his doubts about Maxwell's inclusion. "Glenn Maxwell, I don’t think will be there," he stated, suggesting that Maxwell's career appears to be winding down. He also raised questions about Marcus Stoinis's future participation, noting that Stoinis primarily focuses on T20 tournaments globally rather than extensive state cricket or the BBL. Despite this, Ponting conceded that Stoinis's all-round capabilities might still earn him a spot. He anticipates that Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head will likely remain in contention, with Josh Inglis also expected to be available. Steve Smith, he added, has openly expressed a desire to be part of an Olympic team, though the feasibility of that remains uncertain.

But here's where it gets controversial... Over the past five years, there have been noticeable tensions between the current Australian squad and former players, particularly since Justin Langer's departure as coach in early 2022. However, Ponting vehemently refuted any suggestion of schadenfreude among past players. "There’s just little areas that you have to win that Australia haven’t been able to win," he explained. He stressed that in their private communication channels, past players don't engage in negative commentary about the current team's performance. "We just want to see our team do well. So, unfortunately, that hasn’t happened over the last couple of weeks. And that’s something that group of players has to live with." Ponting also highlighted Cameron Green's lack of significant impact during the World Cup as a considerable concern, especially given the substantial investment made in the promising all-rounder.

"You look at that Australian team on paper, it just doesn’t look to have that sort of aura around it that a lot of other Australian teams have going into ICC events and World Cups," Ponting observed. He concluded by emphasizing the critical need for star and experienced players to perform and deliver in crucial moments if a team aims to win a tournament, a quality he felt was lacking in Australia's recent campaign.

What do you think? Do you agree with Ricky Ponting's assessment of Glenn Maxwell's future in the World Cup? And is it fair to say that past generations of players are always harsher critics of the current team? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
