Despite having acquired Jose A. Ferrer through a deal with the Washington Nationals, the Mariners are still on the lookout for another pitcher to enhance their bullpen. While there is a glimmer of hope with approximately $15 million available after Polanco's departure, the reality is that this financial flexibility may not translate into effective solutions.
The current state of the free-agent market for relievers is quite alarming; it’s nothing short of chaotic. A stark illustration of this can be seen in the comparison of projected contracts for 11 relievers by FanGraphs against the actual deals they secured. The results are striking:

- Actual: $313.25 million
This discrepancy of nearly $100 million highlights the inflated nature of today's market, even as former Mariner Edwin Díaz signed a less lucrative deal than expected—three years at $69 million with the Los Angeles Dodgers, compared to his initial projection of four years and $84 million. Surprisingly, it's the lesser-known relievers who are landing these extravagant contracts, including some names that initially seemed like feasible options for the Mariners.
Tyler Rogers was one such reliever who remained on the Mariners' radar until the end of the Winter Meetings. Although he lacked the strikeout capability that the team's bullpen desperately needed in 2025, his unique submarine pitching style could have added diversity to their lineup. FanGraphs estimated his value at a manageable one-year, $8 million contract for Seattle. Instead, he opted for a more lucrative three-year deal worth $37 million with the Toronto Blue Jays.
This flurry of activity in the market suggests that the remaining top-tier relievers, like Pete Fairbanks, Seranthony Domínguez, Luke Weaver, and Brad Keller, will likely command hefty contracts. Consequently, this represents a challenging situation for the Mariners’ front office, which must balance its budget wisely without overspending on a single player. After all, the need for a significant offensive upgrade remains pressing, and Andrew Knizner alone cannot fulfill their requirements for a backup catcher behind Cal Raleigh.
