The UK is calling for decisive action against Russia following the tragic poisoning of Alexei Navalny, a prominent Russian opposition figure. Navalny's widow, Yulia Navalnaya, has consistently maintained that her husband was murdered by poisoning. Tests conducted by European countries using samples smuggled from the prison revealed a substance derived from the toxin found in Ecuadorian dart frogs. This evidence contradicts Moscow's claim that Navalny died of natural causes.
The Russian embassy in London has denied any involvement, dismissing the findings as "feeble-mindedness of Western fabulists" and accusing critics of engaging in "necro-propaganda." However, Truss stands firm, asserting that the use of poison is a clear breach of international rules and conventions, and action must be taken.
"A group of European ministers has reported this to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. We want to see accountability and a response to this aggression," she said.
When asked about specific actions, Truss highlighted the potential for coordinated sanctions against the Russian regime, stating, "We believe in the strength of our partnerships abroad, which allow us to maintain pressure on Russia."
Conservative shadow foreign secretary Dame Priti Patel, also appearing on the show, called for stronger action, arguing that sanctions are being circumvented. She urged the government to take direct action against individuals in the UK and suggested targeting Russian oil refineries to cut off financial flows supporting the Russian economy.
"We cannot allow Russia's financial lifelines to continue propping up their state and their aggressive activities, including state-sponsored murders," she emphasized.
