The Chicago White Sox are poised to build on a surprisingly strong second half of their season, aiming to leave behind a string of tough years and ascend to new heights! After enduring three consecutive seasons with over 100 losses, the team is buzzing with optimism, fueled by an active offseason, a wave of promising young talent, and a camaraderie that extends beyond the dugout.
Pitcher Mike Vasil confidently declared on the first day of spring training, "I think we're going to be good. I think we're a good team. We also have a lot of energy. I think we're all bonded over experiences. And we're all friends. That plays such a vital role on a team. You're not just a work partner. We genuinely care about each other." This sentiment highlights a crucial element often overlooked in professional sports: the power of genuine connection.
But here's where it gets interesting: Vasil isn't just relying on good vibes. The bullpen has been significantly bolstered with the additions of closer Serathony Dominguez and Jordan Hicks. On the offensive front, the White Sox have made some electrifying moves, bringing in Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami and outfielder Austin Hays. These new faces join a lineup that already showed considerable promise, finishing in the upper half of the league in OPS during the latter half of last season, even cracking the top 10 in home runs. Vasil echoed the excitement, stating, "When you're at home in the offseason and you're seeing the team is improving, its very, very exciting."
Last season's late surge saw the White Sox achieve a respectable 28-37 record after the All-Star break. This is a significant turnaround for an organization that, just two years prior, set a modern-day record for losses in a single season with 121, followed by a 102-loss campaign in 2025. The hope in Chicago is that the darkest days are now firmly in the rearview mirror.
General Manager Chris Getz shared this optimistic outlook: "There's a fair amount of momentum that's been created both because of the second half last year and some of the acquisitions that we were able to make in the offseason. So yeah, we feel really good about where we're at. The room is excited, they're hungry, but we have to go out and play good baseball. And that's why we're out here in spring training to really set the stage for that."
The pitching rotation also received a veteran boost with the return of right-hander Eric Fedde. He'll be joining a competitive group that includes Davis Martin, Jonathan Cannon, Sean Burke, Shane Smith, and newcomer Anthony Kay, all of whom pitched for the team in 2024.
Similarly, the outfield is shaping up to be a battleground for talent, with Hays joining fellow newcomer Luisangel Acuña, who was acquired from the Mets in a trade for Luis Robert Jr. "All that competition is good," commented Cannon. "It brings out the best in us. We're all friends. That breeds all sort of success."
When asked about the team's priorities, Cannon was unequivocal: "One thousand percent. I think this clubhouse is focused on winning. We know we can. We have a lot of talent in this clubhouse. We acquired guys this offseason. We're excited to see them play. I think it's a great unit. I'm excited to see where it takes us this year."
And this is the part most people miss: The AL Central, while not boasting a 90-win team last year, has been a uniquely competitive division. Three teams from the Central made the postseason in 2024, and Cleveland and Detroit followed suit in 2025. This raises the exciting question: can the White Sox genuinely contend for a playoff spot in 2026?
Getz reflected on the team's progress: "We won some really, really good series against some good ball clubs." While a September series win in Detroit was a highlight, the team also faced tough sweeps against the Guardians, Orioles, and Yankees, pushing them past the 100-loss mark again. The true extent of their leap forward in 2026 remains to be seen, but with an improving offense, a strengthened bullpen, and the No. 1 pick in the upcoming amateur draft, there's a tangible sense of optimism for the White Sox that hasn't been felt in years.
Cannon summed up the shift in mindset: "The last couple of years you heard a lot of growing as a group. Now, we have a couple seasons under our belt. It's time to go out there and win some ballgames."
